Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone this year, but its availability timeline could be different from usual launches. As per Barclays analyst Tim Long, the device may be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series but released later.
iPhone Fold: Expected launch timeline and strategy
According to Tim Long, Apple could unveil the iPhone Fold alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September, following its typical announcement cycle. However, the foldable model may only go on sale in December 2026, indicating a staggered rollout strategy.
Apple has followed a similar approach in the past. Devices such as the iPhone X and iPhone XR were introduced during the standard launch event but became available weeks later. This suggests that a delayed release for a new form factor like a foldable device would not be unusual.
The delay could be linked to production complexity or supply chain considerations. Reports indicate that the foldable iPhone has reached an advanced stage of development, with its design nearing completion, which supports the possibility of a release within the year.
The iPhone Fold is expected to support multitasking features such as running two apps side by side when unfolded. This would align it with existing foldable devices that focus on productivity and larger screen usage.
Tim Long also suggests that Apple may adopt a split launch strategy for its upcoming lineup. The base iPhone 18 and related models could arrive in March 2027, alongside either an iPhone Air successor or a possible return of the Plus variant.
If this strategy is implemented, Apple could move towards a more flexible release cycle, allowing it to better manage new categories like foldable devices while maintaining updates to its main lineup.
